Talal Derki

Talal Derki was born in Damascus in 1977 and studied film directing in Athens. He worked as an assistant director for feature film productions and was a director for different Arab TV programs between 2009 and 2011. Furthermore, he worked as a cameraman for CNN and Thomson & Reuters. TalalDerki’s short films and documentaries received awards at a variety of festivals. His feature documentary RETURN TO HOMS has won the Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Grand Jury Prize in 2014.

The family of Abu Ossama lives in a small village in the north of Syria. They are dreaming of the caliphate becoming true. Meanwhile a cruel war destroys the country they love. In the middle of this TalalDerki stays with them trying to understand their way of thinking and the effects of the religion. He is especially follows the children. What are their wishes and what is their future. Will the dream of a caliphate become true?
